A Message from Av Westin, Executive Director of the NATAS Foundation

It is with deep regret that we announce the suspension of the 2008-2009 competition for the National Student Award for Excellence on the National level.

Partly as a result of the recent severe downturn in the nation’s economy, corporate and personal grants and donations that provided National Student Television (NSTV) with funds to conduct our annual competition have not materialized. There is no money to continue our operations.

But this program is too good to let die.

As such, each of our regional chapters will be working together to continue the program on a local level. Although there will not be any national student winners, the chapters will continue to honor and reward their local high school winners as they have done in the past. For more information regarding your regional chapter’s program, please call or email them directly. If you’re not sure how to contact your local chapter, follow this link to find contact information for each of our 19 chapters: http://www.emmyonline.tv/chapters.html

Despite our national suspension of this year’s competition, the NSTV website will remain on line enabling us to continue to proudly display the winning efforts of the past and for teachers and students to download free copies of “Best Practices for Broadcast Journalists”.

There is always hope. We are still trying to solicit funds and if any materialize, we will resume the National Student television program. Until then, thank you for your interest and for participating in a program that made an important contribution, helping high school students achieve a better understanding of the best practices of broadcast journalism.

We want to thank Mirror-Image for supporting the National Student Television Competition and their efforts to continue support of the competiton in the future. For more about Mirror-Image's support of the NSTV competition click here.

Sincerely,

Av Westin
